The Lightbulb

When Flash 1.0 first came out (back when it was still FutureSplash, and Macromedia hadn't yet bought it), I created this cartoon as a way of teaching myself the software. It just so happened that I had written a broken-heart poem recently, and it seemed like the perfect story to animate at the time as "practice."

What turned out to be just a little personal learning expedition had amazing results. I won an "Animation of the Day" award, and emails poured in from people who loved the story, and the cartoon. People wrote things like "your butterfly broke my heart" and "make more!" and "I loved the caterpillar story!" It was really a lot of fun.

Perhaps the greatest result was that a major book publisher contacted me and asked if I would be interested in writing the first after-market Flash book. What an honor! It was a tough decision to decline - but I was just too busy nurturing a new baby business at the time to write a book.

Meanwhile, years later, the Lightbulb story still gets great kudo letters, some from parents who bookmarked it to show their children :)
